Since 2020 Estuary Care Foundation has partnered with North Haven Surf Life Saving Club seeking a Tidal Swimming Facility in the Port River.
The Coastal Engineering Scoping Study for a Tidal Swimming Facility: Port River, Adelaide was released in November 2023, following City Port Adelaide Enfield consideration of the Study. Council was advised at its November meeting that it was up to them, through the Business Planning process in early 2024, as to what priority would be given to the swimming facility and what work would be done to progress its planning.
On May 14th, on behalf of the Friends of Port River (FPR), Catherine McMahon made representation to Council at their monthly meeting seeking Council funding in 2024/25 for further human health assessment, environmental studies and consultation with key stakeholders, at an estimated cost of $40K – $50K. FPR thanks planner Mark Western, Integrated Coasts, who undertook a pro-bono review of the Scoping Study and developed a proposal for the further work needed at this stage.
On June 11th, Council at its meeting resolved that “the funding for the feasibility study for a tidal pool is included in the current budget process”. Many thanks to Councillors from across the City who voted in support of the motion.
FPR will continue to investigate opportunities for capital funds for a Swimming Facility including from the Commonwealth Government, from the State Government’s Community Recreation and Sport Facility Program and other sources.
