Community Engagement, Feb-June, 2024

Friends of Port River (FPR) are continuing the community engagement activities of the Estuary Care Foundation and have undertaken tours, speaking engagements and other activities:

Feb 19th: Catherine McMahon and Steve Papp spoke to Urrbrae TAFE students, studying Conduct Intertidal Marine Monitoring. Steve and Catherine have been doing these lectures biannually since 2022.

Feb 23rd: At a Green Adelaide event Meet Your Local Group at Bower Cottages, Semaphore Park, representatives of local dunes groups and Catherine spoke about our work

March 13th: With Peri Coleman, Catherine was briefed and consulted, by City Port Adelaide staff, about the Living Shoreline at Yitpi Yartapuultiku

April 3rd: Together with NP&WS rangers, Catherine spoke to Year 12 Ocean View College students about dolphins in the Port River and the habitat that supports them

April 2nd: Kaurna elder Margaret Brodie, Sandra Dann, Semaphore Largs Dunes Group and Catherine spoke to Flinders University students about Learning on Country

May 11th: Successful History Festival event, Celebrate SA Shellfish, organised by Friends, was held at The British Hotel, Port Adelaide. PhD student Brad Martin was the guest speaker and over 30 people attended.

May 23rd: ECF’s Future Vision was profiled at Green Adelaide’s Annual Volunteer celebration, together with profiles of other groups supported by Green Adelaide. Achievements included the Premiers Certificate for recognition of outstanding volunteer service to Semaphore Largs Dunes Group and the SL Dunes Group and Port Environment Centre receiving certificates of appreciation for 5 years of service.

May 28 – 29: Catherine attended the Australian Coastal Restoration Network Symposium in Sydney for updates on coastal restoration projects and research across Australia

June 23rd: Port Environment Centre’s Discovery Walk was held along the banks of the Port River and 23 participants joined Catherine as guide in learning more about the River and its ecology.

For 3 to 4 years representatives of Port Adelaide Residents Environment Protection Group (PAREPG) and Estuary Care Foundation have met regularly with Australian Naval Infrastructure (ANI) as part of its community engagement process. Since March 2024, reps of PAREPG and FPR are meeting monthly with reps of ANI and the Australian Submarine Agency.
